Glossary of Legal Terms

In preparing Legal Documents, the student must be exceedingly accurate and must have a very good idea of the legal terminology to be used. 

We have prepared a glossary of terms which are associated with legal documents.

Endorsement

An endorsement is a description of a legal document printed on the outside of a covering sheet or on the back of the document which is folded in a special way for filing and safe keeping. 

Attestation Clause

The section of a legal document where the witness(es) sign(s) to testify that he/she (they) has (have) witnessed a particular signature or signatures. 

Counterpart

It is the duplicate or photocopy of a legal document.

Engrossment

It is the final copy which is ready for signature.

Testimonium Clause

The section of a legal document which begins with 'IN WITNESS ... or AS WITNESS ...'

Stitching Margin

This is wider left margin of 1.5".  (One inch is the regular margin and .5 is to allow for binding or stitching.)

Connecting Words

All connecting words must be capitalised e.g. WHEREAS, BETWEEN, WHENEVER, TOGETHER, HEREBY, WHEREBY, IN WITNESS, AS WITNESS, SIGNED
